The Hannah Grimes Center's annual CONNECT Event will feature Michael Shuman, one of the nation's leading experts on community economics and author of The Small-Mart Revolution: How Local Businesses Are Beating the Global Competition. Shuman will discuss how a community can build a strong network of locally-owned businesses that contribute to a vibrant community and thriving regional economy.
CONNECT 2011 will be held Wednesday, October 12, 2011, from 5:00 through 7:30 p.m., at Alyson's Orchard in Walpole, NH. Everyone with an interest in the long-term economic health and vitality of the Monadnock Region is welcome.
"We're excited to have a nationally known expert like Michael Shuman as our featured speaker" said Mary Ann Kristiansen, Executive Director of the Hannah Grimes Center. "Shuman's perspective that the key to community prosperity includes a vigorous network of locally-owned businesses serving primarily local markets is compelling and challenges a good deal of traditional economic development thought."
CONNECT 2011 helps Hannah Grimes pursue its broader vision of a sustainable thriving local economy and vibrant community built upon the region's heritage, culture, natural resources, and the civic-minded entrepreneurial spirit of its people. CONNECT 2011 is an opportunity for community-minded area residents to network, share and learn together.
An economist, attorney, author and entrepreneur, Shuman is Director for Research and Public Policy for the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). Small-Mart is an initiative of BALLE. Small-Mart aims to improve the prosperity of every community by maximizing local self-reliance and opportunities for locally-owned businesses.
Kristiansen noted that "The evening will include delicious food, a fun, friendly environment, and great networking with other community-minded people. We look forward to exploring how to build a strong locally-based economy and how that contributes to a more prosperous and vibrant Keene community."
In addition, the winner of Hannah Grimes' annual Entrepreneur of the Year award will be introduced and recognized at CONNECT 2011.
