Holiday Hints for Workplace Health

The holidays are a time of joy for most people but also a time of stress. Companies can either contribute to the joy of employees with a few basic decisions or increase stress at the worst possible time of the year. If I could wave a magic wand and talk to every CEO and business owner in the world at once, I would say:

A "Holiday" Party Is Still a Party. Yes, it's held at Christmas time but it would be kind to remember that not everyone celebrates Christmas. And kindness never goes in and out of style.

Time Off Doesn't Count If the Cell Phone Is On. While your employees have time off, don't phone them, don't email them, don't ask them if they could come into the office "for a few hours."

If Deadlines Are Flexible All Year, They're Flexible on December 31. Nothing is gained by deciding that December 31st is the absolute final day for a project simply because it marks the end of the year. If you were flexible with deadlines in January, you can be flexible in December.

Don't Fire Anyone. It's a tradition to fire people just before the holidays. I'm sure there are sound business reasons for this. None of them are humane.

May your holidays bring you and your employees continued health, happiness and success.
