How do you get your resume in front of the right people?

Don’t neglect your networking! Most of the professional people I know got their new jobs through a friend of a friend. Remember, it is the “who you know” concept.  At any networking opportunity, share your resume and educate people on what your perfect job looks like and where you expect to find it. Some of the other steps you can take to get your resume out there:

*      Meet with any temporary staffing agencies  in the geographic area of your choice. If you are crystal clear about the type of job you are looking for, it is possible that they can get you in the door to a company that can provide that job. It has been my experience in the last few years that many companies are not advertising open positions, but they are going directly to these agencies. Some of these agencies offer companies a temp to perm option, so a temporary job could lead to a full-time situation. It also gives you the opportunity to check companies out to see if they have the type of culture/job/work environment you are looking for.
*      Go on the internet. If you don’t have internet service at home, most libraries do. Many of our local coffee shops like Panera’s advertise free wi-fi and encourage folks to show up with their laptops.
*      Once you’ve gained access to the internet, go to Craig’s List, monster.com, NHJobWorks, etc, etc.   Department of Employment Security can also give you other websites that post jobs.  If you have identified your perfect job, now identify the kinds of organizations that can provide that job, check out their websites and send them a resume if possible.
*      Put a system together to track what you are doing: document who you sent your resume to, where you have filled out applications; what responses you’ve gotten (if any), what steps you are taking next. I tell potential clients that I will continue to follow up with them until they say no. Be persistent and consistent.
The only other advice I can give really needs to be customized to the individual. For a free 15-minute conversation, go to my website www.hrcompliance101.com to contact me.
