Product Inserts, Hang Tags and Neckers: Great Copy in Small Places

That slip of paper you place inside your skin cream package, the tag that dangles from your handmade pocketbooks and the cardboard sign you sling around the neck of your bottled barbeque sauce or wine--they are all great places for an advertising message.

Customers are a captive audience for your product insert, hang tag or necker: they are standing in front of your product, already tempted to buy. How can you nudge them into parting with their cash?

Keep your message short and lively. A product insert offers the most space for copywriting but no customer will read page after page of your life story. Customers want to hear "what's in it for me?" A product insert is perfect for recipes, how-to's and entertaining facts. In the small space of hang tags and neckers, content yourself with a few sentences: a tag line, a testimonial or a sales offer. And don't forget your contact information.

Make sure the message is readable. The space may be tiny but the type should be large. Stay away from light, flowery fonts that look like handwriting. They are hard to read, and you want your customers to read.

Remember the eye candy. Great graphic design boosts any message. Choose a bright and simple design that doesn't interfere with the copy but draws customers in to read.
