One of our local employers was on the front page of the Monadnock Ledger last week regarding a $400,000 settlement with OSHA for worker safety violations. Ouch! They not only have to pay the fines, but they also must take corrective actions & improve the safety of their workplaces for all of their employees. They have agreed to get a full time safety &...
Writing Marketing Materials for Expos Like BizConNH

On October 1, I'll be a speaker at BizConNH (www.bizconnh.com) and I'll also have an exhibit booth. Participating in events like BizConNH--which attracts over 130 business owners, entrepreneurs, managers and sales teams--is a great way to market any business. But while attending and networking are great steps, participating as a speaker or exhibitor gives you more exposure and more opportunity to connect with the other participants, including the other exhibitors. You know to bring business cards to hand out at a business event, but what are the other must haves and must do's?
- Bring something educational to give away--a brochure or flyer or white paper giving how-to or what-if advice that visitors to your booth can refer to long after the event is over. Pens are nice but when is the last time you checked your pen for contact information?
- Speaking of contact information, put it on everything--and I mean everything. That includes every page of a white paper.
- Give people a choice. Some will opt for a flyer, some for a business card, some for a glossy brochure, some for a tri-fold, rack card or oversized postcard. You certainly don't need all those items. But rather than bringing 2 nearly identical flyers, bring 1 flyer and 1 rack card.
- Remember the eye candy. Photos, bright colors and white space attract people more than densely packed text.
- Tell your story. Everyone loves a story. If you have testimonials or success stories, now is the time to print them out.
- Keep your message current. If you bring the same three pieces every time you speak or exhibit, make sure those pieces are up to date. It's easy to forget that marketing messages age. In the last year, did you start a blog or a Twitter account? Did you change prices? Are you offering or emphasizing a different product or service?
I hope to see you at BizConNH and have a chance to share my marketing materials with you--and I hope you'll visit my 11 a.m. workshop, "5 Ways to Put WOW in Your Content."
